Sri Aurobindo’s Vedic Glossary is an incredible resource for anyone interested in studying and understanding the Rig Veda. Sri Aurobindo was able to determine that the Veda had a two-fold meaning, the surface meaning that hid the true esoteric spiritual truths from those who were not ready to understand and apply them. Sri Aurobindo translated a large number of verses from the Rig Veda, many of which were reproduced in his two major works on the subject The Secret of the Veda and Hymns to the Mystic Fire, the latter containing all the hymns to Agni from the Rig Veda. Sri Aurobindo referenced the Vedic hymns in a number of his writings, in particular in The Life Divine.
Commentators have frequently experienced confusion when they look to the Rig Veda as an underlying spiritual text. The surface meaning helped create this confusion as the Vedic Rishis used words with a dual significance, hiding the profound psychological and spiritual insights within the outer forms presented. At the same time, texts with profound spiritual import and psychological knowledge, such as the Upanishads, referred to themselves as the ‘secret of the Veda’. Sri Aurobindo undertook to uncover this secret.
The compilation presented here gives over and above the rendering of seven thousand words, grammatical and other notes on more than three hundred words. Besides, the introduction traces the outline of the discovery in the words of Sri Aurobindo. It shows how he stumbled upon the secret of the hymns—without any intention of being a scholar of the Veda—during his spiritual practice of yoga, how he followed up the clue and was led to reveal the inmost significance.
The book has been long out of print and virtually impossible to find. The detailed review of thousands of words from the Veda along with insight into Sri Aurobindo’s process and what he discovered, make this an essential aid in understanding the deeper sense of the Rig Veda, while it acts as an introduction to the two major works on the subject referenced above.
